Knife edge guard vs saya
Both do one job. They keep the edge off everything that is not food. They do it differently. Updated August 27, 2026.
What an edge guard is
A plastic (sometimes felt-lined) channel that snaps over the blade. Sold in standard lengths, so one guard fits many knives. Loosely. It is cheap and easy to replace, which is what it is for. A few dollars of insurance in a drawer or a knife roll.
What a saya is
A wooden sheath — the word is Japanese, and the tradition comes from Japanese kitchen knives. A saya is shaped to the blade it covers, so the knife slides in and stays put without a clamp. A custom knife cover is the same idea generalized: a wooden sheath cut to one specific knife's outline, whatever the knife.

Which one should you get?
- A drawer full of inexpensive knives: edge guards. Genuinely the right tool — cheap, replaceable, done.
- One knife you care about, carried to work or stored where it can knock against things: a fitted cover. The fit is the point. Nothing bears on the edge and nothing slides off in transit.
- A carbon-steel blade: wood, for the moisture behavior above.
